Are you tired of shaving, plucking and tweezing away unwanted hair? Laser Hair Removal treatments are one of the most common cosmetic procedures at The Medical Spa of Baton Rouge and for a good reason! Below we’ve shared how the treatment works and why thousands of people across the country choose Laser Hair Removal everyday.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is a popular procedure designed to remove unwanted hair from the body. Many people choose laser hair removal because of how precise the instrumentation is as it eliminates undesirable hairs. During the procedure, lasers selectively target dark, coarse hairs, leaving nearby skin undamaged. It only the takes the laser a fraction of a second to treat and remove hundreds of hairs. Your doctor can target an area the size of a quarter every second! Smaller areas can be treated in less than a minute, while anything larger may take up to an hour. After about three to seven sessions, most patients can expect permanent hair loss.

Before the Procedure: Preparation

At The Medical Spa of Baton Rouge, each patient is required to attend a one-on-one consultation with the technician performing the procedure. About six weeks before treatment, you should stop plucking or waxing to prepare the area for the procedure. You should also avoid sun exposure six weeks before and after treatment. Sunlight makes the treatment less effective and increases the chances of complication following the procedure.

During the Procedure: What To Expect

Before the procedure begins, your technician will trim the hair in the treatment area to a few millimeters above the skin’s surface. The laser equipment is adjusted to suit the thickness of your hair, location, and skin color. Depending on the type of laser or light source used, the technician may use a cooling gel to protect the outer layers of your skin and help the laser light penetrate the uppermost layers of the epidermis. Next, your technician will deliver a pulse of light to the treatment area. Once the procedure is completed, the technician will give you ice packs, anti-inflammatory creams or lotions to ease discomfort if necessary.

Recovery

For a few days following treatment, the area may look and feel sunburned. Over the next few weeks, your treated hair will fall out. Apply sunscreen daily for the following month to prevent temporary changes in the color of the treated skin. Potential side effects include swelling, scarring, and redness. Blisters are a common side effect for people with darker skin complexions following treatment. Permanent scarring or changes in skin color is rare.
