Teeth Whitening: Which Option Is Best For Me?

There are few things more attractive than a bright smile. White teeth make you look younger and healthier. As such, they boost confidence and help you make better first impressions. It’s no surprise that teeth whitening procedures and over-the-counter products are on the rise. Navigating this saturated market can make it difficult to know which option is best for you. Here is some information on various teeth whitening options to help you decide.

Over-the-Counter Bleaching

While over-the-counter bleaching products are convenient and less expensive, the results are typically also inconsistent. The biggest issue is that these kits are not customized to your teeth, which have a variety of unique angulations, shades of color, and dental work that do not respond to over-the-counter products. This causes an uneven application. Additionally, strips and kits have lower concentrations of active ingredients and therefore will not have lasting results.

Professional Dental Bleaching

With this option, a mold will be taken of your teeth to create model. Filler gel is then painted over the model teeth targeted for whitening. The amount is specific to the location and angulations of your teeth. A custom bleaching tray is then created using your mold. The trays are worn for 2-3 hours for 1-2 weeks. Most results show a lighter smile by 6-8 shades. The trays are reusable; however, the bleaching refills will need to be purchased for additional uses later. Professional bleaching will typically last about 12 months.

Laser Teeth Whitening

Laser teeth whitening like the BEYONDTM WhiteSpa® Select system is becoming increasingly popular for long-term teeth whitening. Results can last up to 2 years, which is longer than any other option. Additionally, the treatment consists of one 36-minute process, although it is generally recommended that you have this done in a single one-hour session. The process uses a powerful halogen light source and whitening gel which offers the most powerful cosmetic teeth whitening system currently available with results of 5-14 shades lighter. This option not only cleans surface stains, but also stains found deep inside the teeth.  This is the fastest way to get the whitest teeth possible with the longest lasting results.

Keep Smiling!

Before deciding, it’s best to talk with your cosmetic dentistry consultant about the options and pros and cons specific to your needs. And remember, while whitening treatments help to reduce existing stains, consuming stain-causing foods and drinks, or using tobacco, will accelerate the yellowing of your teeth. If you avoid these things and follow a proper dental maintenance, you can expect your teeth to stay lighter for an even longer period of time.
