Acne is a worldwide problem that affects nearly 100% of the population at some point in their lifetime. For some people acne can be treated with over-the-counter scrubs, and daily skincare routine; however, for many people acne can be severe, long lasting and can leave disfiguring scars. While acne usually improves after puberty, many adults see persistent acne, unaffected by traditional methods of removal.

Laser Therapy

At The Medical Spa of Baton Rouge, our aestheticians can offer a number of treatment options to help with persistent acne or scars from acne. One option is laser therapy.

Although there are many laser therapies available, few have been used in the treatment of acne. The pulsed-dye laser and 1450 nm infrared laser have both given positive treatment results in trial studies. Most patients see very little side effects, and experience significant reduction in acne after a single treatment.

Chemical Peel

Another option would be a chemical peel. They’ve long been used to rejuvenating the face, and reducing signs of aging, but now they’re also used in the treatment of acne. A chemical peel requires very little downtime post-treatment, and patients usually do not experience pain or discomfort. This treatment is a simple, painless way to tackles skin imperfections on the face, as well as pigmentation issues. Your skin will come out feeling and looking more moisturized.

For drastic results, our aestheticians usually suggest 3-6 chemical peels, but the number of treatments will depend on the severity of the treated area. Chemical peels not only help with acne scars and irregular pigmentation issues, they are also effective for improving damage caused by crows feet, fines lines, wrinkles, sun damage or aging spots.

Microdermabrasion Therapy

Lastly, we offer a treatment called microdermabrasion therapy. In preliminary studies, microdermabrasion treatments have reduced acne lesions and improved the texture of the skin in most patients. Microdermabrasion combines exfoliation and infusion to improve the look and feel of the skin. A small vacuum is used to gently lift and exfoliate the skin, as well as promote collagen production, oxygen production and nourishment of the skin. In other words, microdermabrasion encourages the skin to heal itself. When the body responds to the treatment by healing the skin, you benefit from a higher production of natural collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. The skin will become thicker and stronger due to the treatment, resulting in healthier looking skin.

The key to long-lasting acne treatment is consistency. Most patients who do not see positive results are failing to follow up with a daily skincare regiment or prescription.
